Reading & Vocabulary
Overview
Vocabulary & Reading development is integrated in all Enrichment programs.
For many years, we have chosen to not offer a course that focused solely on vocabulary and reading development as such a course would be one-dimensional and easily replicated by a disciplined student. To avoid unnecessarily charging parents for a dedicated course and neglecting students who need support in their reading development, all students in any Capstone Primary or Middle School enrichment courses are automatically enrolled in an ongoing weekly reading program that use articles from various international news publications. These articles are reviewed and edited by Capstone to highlight key phrases and words and include guiding questions so that students maximize their benefit as they read these articles. Additionally, weekly follow-up quizzes are given for each article and the performance is monitored by Capstone administration. We even create seasonal competitions with a variety of awards and prizes to motivate students to persist in their studies.
While we believe that reading skills and a larger vocabulary are tremendous assets, we do not believe parents need to enroll their children into specialized courses solely for that purpose. For students intending to take the SSAT or SAT, and are specifically preparing for the vocabulary and reading rigors of those tests, we suggest the Junior SAT or SSAT courses.
