Scholars
Overview
The aim of the Scholars course is to help students develop a framework to methodically analyze any complex issue and then be able to present their findings in a confident, persuasive manner. With years of experience teaching the program, we have refined the content and the delivery so that lessons are challenging, educational, and fun for even the most advanced students. Through instructor-supervised research, analysis, discussion and in-class debate on global concerns, Time and Economist articles, Harvard Business School cases, and Capstone-generated content, students are taught to dissect complex problems and present compelling, intelligent argument and rebuttals. The fast-paced nature of impromptu debate and class discussion force students to develop arguments under stress, building adaptation to high-stress academic environments.
Each class, students are introduced to an issue of local, regional, or international importance and are guided by the instructor to explore the legal, economic, business, political, and/or moral issues inherent within the specific event. Students who commit to this course walk away with a critical thinking methodology that can be applied in both their current academic and future professional environments. As well, their comprehensive analysis is complemented with exemplary presentation skills. Ultimately, students are given the skills to think and act like a leader, mastering the foundational skills to both academic success and future professional leadership.
Parents of our Scholars students notice significant increase in their children’s speaking precision, thinking “speed”, thinking depth, reading ability (from the required research) and confidence.
*For advanced debaters from grades 6 – 10 who want to only focus on competitive debate (including HKSDC, Sing Tao, SCMP-NESTA and British Parliamentary formats), we also have Debate & Analysis classes that are available to current school-team debaters and non-debaters who demonstrate an already strong foundation for debating.
