Debate and Analysis

Overview

The Debate and Analysis (D&A) course is designed for students who are intent on becoming top debaters in their schools and Hong Kong all the while retaining an appreciation for broad critical thinking skills and an awareness of societal issues. This program sometimes uses curriculum from the Scholars program, but supplements lessons with specialized training designed specifically for competitive debate. Capstone's debate students represent numerous debate teams in Hong Kong at both the junior and senior levels and our development of these students has helped these students and their schools win "Top Speaker" awards and debate championships. Capstone debate coaches include the current official debate coach of Diocesan Boys School and International Christian School as well as a former top US university debater. Capstone's debate curriculum is also supplemented by the expertise of former top debaters who have captained and competed for a variety of national debate teams and who continue to coach top performing high school and university teams throughout Asia; these specialists function as consultants to Capstone and allow us to evolve the debate training available to our students.

In every major secondary school debate tournament at both the Junior and Senior levels, there are a substantial number of Capstone-trained debaters. Our consistency in producing standout debaters is unparalleled by any other program in Asia and we encourage prospective students and parents to visit Capstone to learn more about our debate students' achievements.

For entry into the competitive D&A classes, please contact administration and request a special appointment. Aside from the basic Scholars assessment, students also must be interviewed by one or both D&A instructors.
