The IB English Diploma course is designed for students studying for the IB Diploma (English Language A). We focus on extensive experience and training in the study, interpretation, and analysis of literary works. Looking at texts from the genres of drama, poetry, short story and the novel (including world literature in translation), students will be engaged to think critically about the written word; study literary devices in context; utilize outside sources to support arguments; and find tools to clearly express their own ideas. This course is unique in that the last class of each month will be a private session between one student and the instructor – making this the only course at Capstone that is scheduled as a hybrid group-private course. Private sessions allow the instructor to gear content specifically for students’ individual book lists, and help them prepare for IOP and IOC exams, while group sessions expose students to a wide variety of unfamiliar texts so they can tackle the unseen section of the written exam with confidence. As well, students will be asked to present power point presentations on designated topics throughout the course, where public speaking skills such as poise, diction, and clarity will be honed.
